The Berlin Wall, the concept of the border, conflict and war, has been my primary inspiration for the creation of my recent works. In a more theoretical level the removal, connection or union of two or more points have served as the main approach on which I developed these forms. My work depicts the present, the East-West dichotomy, the relationship between “Eastern” and “Western” nations and their endless efforts to dominate the whole world. Through my work it is attempted initially a reference to the historical memory as regards the Berlin Wall and consequently, in a more evolutional way, the meaning and substance of the borders. Borders, visible or not, which surround us and inconstantly are seeking for their gradual degradation through the combination of unpredicted but at the same time predetermined forms. Moreover, based on the Clement Greenberg’s "formalist of expertise" and the theory of his "puristic" speech, while I was creating these series of works I was trying persistently to be focused on morphological types, encompassing as basic elements the form, the composition, the neutral color and the texture.
Compact autonomous forms with bright enclosing shape, which are suspended centrally in the space or expanded out of it, linked together harmoniously, sometimes conversing with other more transparent and sometimes provoking tonal explosions, try in this manner to reflect the expression of a conflict or a war in all levels. Alongside, graphite lines are emerged and are swaying freely, contributing to the wholeness and balance of the composition. Pursuing a "linear style" and using "hard lines" I create extensive and clean color schemes. My objective is the constant quest for "solidity" and the adherence to the composition as an integration process of all the components. Furthermore, the inherited tensions in some paintings, arising from the conflicts of the same forms as each of them claims a significant place in canvas’ limited world, put an emphasis on the existed cultural diversity between East and West. Despite the tension among black, white and grey forms, there is also an optimistic view as they are trying to be connected in a peaceful manner, as it is also depicted on other paintings, in which the forms serve like part of a puzzle and the pieces have been placed together in a logical way.
My purpose is the reduction of painting to its simplest elements and the work’s contraction to the most clean aesthetic substances. By the absence of color and the use of grey tones I seek the values of art itself. My painting by limiting the chromatic scale in black, white and shades of gray, contributes to revealing the substance beyond the possible derogations that the color often brings upon. The black and white forms are simple, rigorous and geometric involving the intention of puristic clearance with references to the minimalist aesthetics.
